This will be our club’s first trip to the Bavarian Alps in Germany! We are running this trip because so many members requested a trip to somewhere new. This area, and trips to this region, get great reviews by American visitors!
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany's number one ski resort town (Google Maps), is Bavaria at it's finest; breathtaking scenery, limitless opportunities for outdoor adventure, gracious hospitality, and unrivaled authenticity and charm. It's a wonderful blend of the modern (Garmisch) and the traditional European (Partenkirchen). The Olympic town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also host to Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, and is known for their almost perfect climate. Located less than 60 miles away from Munich, the area is easily accessed and many excursions can be taken directly from the train station in the center of town. We can also arrange for excursions to some awesome Austrian ski areas. Spend a day in Innsbruck, Salzburg, Munich and more, or visit the famous Neuschwanstein castle, home of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Sightseeing options are endless and local sites include Linderhof Palace, Oberammergau, Ettal Monastery, Baroque Church, Mittenwald, and spending a day or two sightseeing, eating, drinking and shopping along the historical street of Ludwigrabeand!
This is a great sightseeing trip with plenty of skiing/snowboarding in Garmisch! With their 56 cable cars, lifts, and cogwheel trains, you can reach every inch of the vast area. There are two ways up from town: a cogwheel train (a short walk from our hotels), which passes through a three-mile tunnel up the mountain, or an aerial tramway from Eibsee, which ascends nearly 6,400 feet in 10 minutes, making it the world’s tallest single-section lift of its kind. If you have the equipment and experience to venture safely off-piste, there’s a variety of lift-served open bowls and powder to play in. You are sure to create some memorable moments on the snow. But, save some energy for the après ski scene in the cozy mountain bars or the local casino that stays open until sunrise. If you’re interested in some alternative activities there are also many theaters, concerts, art exhibits, museums, tobogganing, ice hockey matches, and spa treatment facilities, in addition to the abundance of dancing and nightlife!
For our skiers & snowboarders, we are recommending the "Top Snow card" lift ticket which allows you to ski/ride two countries; Germany & Austria! The following resorts are covered by the card: Mittenwald - Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Zugspitze and Garmisch-Classic) - Grainau - Ehrwald - Lermoos - Biberwier - Bichlbach - Berwang - Heiterwang. You can ski/ride all around the Zugspitze, today in the Bavaria alps (Germany), tomorrow in the Tyrol alps (Austria). Choose from a total of 89 lifts and downhill runs covering a distance of 207 kilometers. The cost is only 159€ for a four out of six day pass, or 195€ for a five out of ten day. That's about $50 a day with many other cheaper options available! Areas outside of Garmisch under consideration include Mittenwald in Germany, our favorite Axamer Lizum in Austria, the elite Austrian resort of Seefeld and also in the Tyrol the big verticals at Ehrwald and Lermoos.
Optional three night post-trip extension in Budapest, the Paris of the east!
Budapest is the venue of not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage sites. It's the only capital in the world boasting nearly 100 thermal wells and 12 spas, where 19 million liters of thermal water breaks to the surface each and every day. The whole city is packed with fortifications and buildings from Roman times, Turkish baths still in use today, the heritages of the Gothic and Baroque eras, and the incredibly rich architecture of the Art Nouveau. You can gaze out across the entire city from the vantage point of the dome of the Basilica.
